Two medical doctors, Michael Atiba and Michael Ugbeye, have been arraigned by the Lagos State government on charges of involuntary manslaughter.
The doctors were charged following the death of a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi. Atiba, who works at Gbagada General Hospital, and Ugbeye, a consultant at a national orthopedic hospital, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The State Counsel requested a trial date, stating that the defendants neglected to administer anesthesia before and after the surgery, resulting in Ugorobi’s death on October 21, 2023, in Lagos.
The counsel for the second defendant requested bail for his client, emphasizing his extensive experience and commitment to attending court proceedings. The judge granted bail to both defendants in the sum of N5 million each with two sureties. The case is set to commence trial on May 15.
