Destiny Benjamin, a 23-year-old woman, was found dead four days after undergoing hip surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Lagos, also known as the Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, Vanguard reports.
Since her passing, the procedure’s viral footage has been widely shared on social media.
The proprietor of Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ogbe Omoruyi, confirmed the development but refuted the claim that the patient passed away in the hospital while undergoing the procedure.
The deceased underwent surgery on March 8 and had complained of breathing difficulties before being transferred to the Genesis Specialists Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where she passed away, according to Omoruyi, who spoke to Vanguard.
Additionally, Omoruyi—a plastic surgeon—told Vanguard that the dead was 23 years old rather than 20.
She is a female who, according to the documentation she submitted, is 23 years old. She underwent surgery, which went well, and was good afterwards.
“I can prove that everything was good by showing you the case note from our case.
“However, she started experiencing breathing problems after a few days. Before referring her to a critical care unit, which is ten minutes away from our facility, we stabilized her and put her on oxygen.
“Unfortunately, as we all know, surgery carries a certain amount of risk, and if you question any qualified medical professional or surgeon who is familiar with life consumptions and tractions, it is very simple to assume that she could have a fat embolism or clot embolism, but she had trouble breathing.
“A significant inquiry was conducted. It is referred to as a CT Pulmonary Angiogram. Any tumor that is present in the pulmonary system can be found using this.
“The examination was carried out in the facility to which she was directed. She was told she didn’t have an embolism after I was notified and given the results.
“After her operation, her cousin Sunset was by her side. Because they were a group, they moved around. She arrived to see her, and two days later they took pictures while walking around the clinic’s grounds.
This is to inform you that she was alright following the procedure.
Unfortunately, a postmortem has not been performed; I’m not sure if the family will approve.
Ogbe said only two deaths have been recorded in the clinic, adding that they occurred in the years 2018 and 2021, in contrast to social media reports that the medical clinic recorded five deaths in a year.
This can be confirmed with the local government, he continued, as they all have basic health centers where doctors can provide reports on the death toll.
So far, only two fatalities have been reported.
When reached, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos Police Command, stated: “To the best of my knowledge, I am not aware of the incident.
“The deceased’s family has not contacted the police authorities,”
However, attempts to obtain a response from Genesis Specialist Hospital were unsuccessful.
However, the person who took Vanguard’s call at the moment of publication claimed he had no idea what had happened.
