One of the victims was Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a former member of the House of Representatives, who died while watching the match. As a penalty kick was awarded against Nigeria, Dr. Ojougboh slumped and unfortunately did not recover.
Another casualty was Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University Malete. He collapsed after watching the intense game for the full 120 minutes and complained of feeling dizzy before passing away.
Tragically, another incident occurred in Numan, Adamawa state, where a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) collapsed and died while watching the match. His death came just before the decisive penalty shootout that secured Nigeria’s victory.
These incidents have left many in shock and mourning. The Super Eagles, acknowledging the seriousness and impact of these losses, observed a minute of silence in honor of the deceased during their match. This gesture reflects a deep sense of solidarity and compassion from the players towards their fellow countrymen.
It is important to remember and mourn those who have tragically lost their lives while doing something they enjoyed – supporting their national team. May the memories of Dr. Ojougboh, Alhaji Abdullahi, and the NYSC member forever be treasured, and may their families find solace during this difficult time.
