The immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has weighed in on the ongoing political dispute between Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
In a video obtained by Politics Nigeria, Amaechi claimed that the conflict between the two political figures stems primarily from issues surrounding the sharing of funds.
According to Amaechi, both Wike and Fubara should publicly clarify the real reasons behind their dispute to the Nigerian people.
“The fight between the former governor of Rivers State – the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory – and the current governor is about sharing money,” Amaechi stated.
He further expressed concern over the public’s apparent apathy towards corruption, saying, “Nigerians don’t seem to dislike corruption anymore because no one is on the streets questioning the reason for this dispute. If not, both of them should come out and tell us what the quarrel is about.”
Addressing Governor Fubara’s suspension and the imposition of a State of Emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, Amaechi asserted that democracy in the state has been undermined.
He lamented, “Rivers State is the only state in the country where democracy cannot be practiced. They’ve imposed a military rule on us. Secondly, the president acted outside the Constitution. Section 188 of the Constitution clearly states how a governor can leave office – either by death, resignation, or impeachment.”
He criticized the federal government’s intervention, arguing that Tinubu’s actions have destabilized democracy in Nigeria.
“The Constitution does not say that one day, a president can wake up and remove a governor from office. This kind of action threatens the stability of our democracy,” Amaechi concluded.
