A recent graduate of the Department of Quantity Surveying at Nnamdi Azikiwe University has lost her life while attempting to escape from what she believed was a robbery attempt on the school premises.
The deceased, identified as Ifunanya Miracle, also known as Bliss, was traveling in a tricycle with her friend, Peace, a student in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, when a fellow passenger allegedly ordered them to surrender their phones and other valuables.
Panic-stricken, the two young women jumped out of the moving tricycle, with tragic consequences. While Peace sustained injuries and was rushed to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for treatment, Ifunanya was not as fortunate. She hit her head on the ground during the attempted escape and succumbed to her injuries.
It has since been revealed that the “robber” was actually a final-year student at the university who was reportedly engaging in a prank. The student later turned himself in to the police, claiming he was simply trying to prank the victims.
“We heard the guy has reported himself at the police station and claimed it was a prank. How can he be pranking someone on a moving tricycle?” said a student who wished to remain anonymous.
The university’s spokesperson, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the incident, describing it as a “very expensive prank.” He stated that the families of the victims and the perpetrator have met with the university authorities, and an agreement has been reached. The student who carried out the prank will face disciplinary measures after Ifunanya’s funeral.
“The families have reached some agreement and we want the process of the burial to take place before the student that pranked them will face disciplinary measures,” Dr. Ojukwu said.
