The Catholic Archbishop of the Ibadan Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Leke Abegunrin, has lauded the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for his commendable projects and dedication to the development of the state. However, he expressed concerns regarding the governor’s lack of accessibility, which has hindered important discussions on pressing issues affecting the education sector.

Abegunrin made these remarks during a press conference held on Wednesday, organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan to celebrate his upcoming 75th birthday on September 27, 2024, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Mokola, Ibadan.

The Archbishop noted, “Governor Seyi Makinde is doing a good job and working very hard in the state. However, unlike his predecessor, the late Abiola Ajimobi, he is not accessible. I have sought to meet with him on multiple occasions to address matters concerning education in the state, but my attempts have been unsuccessful.”

In addition to his comments on the governor, Abegunrin addressed the current economic challenges facing Nigerians, particularly the rising costs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. He urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to allow Dangote Group to sell fuel directly to consumers, arguing that the NNPCL’s involvement is exacerbating fuel price inflation.

Father Richard Omolade, who also spoke at the event, highlighted the Catholic Church’s initiatives aimed at alleviating hunger and economic hardship in the country. He explained that the church has been actively providing financial assistance and relief materials to those in need, while also offering guidance on improving quality of life.

The press conference brought together a diverse array of dignitaries, including bishops, government officials, clergy, religious leaders, family, and community members, all there to honor Archbishop Abegunrin’s significant contributions to the church and society throughout his leadership.

Celebrated for his dedication, humility, and advocacy for the youth, the church in a statement made available to journalists noted that Abegunrin has made notable strides in promoting social justice, governance, and educational improvements. He has consistently voiced concerns over societal issues and has been a steadfast supporter of returning mission schools to the church.

The statement added that the Archbishop has played an active role at the national level, engaging in discussions on pressing national challenges, including the ongoing economic difficulties and the necessity for government support for church initiatives benefiting all Nigerians. The church concluded with expressions of gratitude for Abegunrin’s impactful leadership, alongside calls for continued prayers for his health and well-being.
