A fire has broken out at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery located in the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.
The Dangote Oil Refinery, which began refining diesel, is a 650,000 barrels per day (BPD) integrated refinery project situated in the Lekki Free Zone. Owned by the Dangote Group, the refinery was inaugurated on May 22, 2023.
SaharaReporters, a news platform, reported that the cause of the inferno, which is currently raging, is yet to be ascertained. A video circulating on social media platforms shows a thick, dark smoke rising from what appears to be one of the tank storages at the facility.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is a crucial part of Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its reliance on imported fuel and achieve self-sufficiency in petroleum products. The incident has raised concerns about the potential impact on the country’s energy supply and the safety of the refinery’s operations.
