Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 81.
The death of the retired Major General and two-time Nigerian leader was announced on Sunday, July 13, by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Shehu, Buhari passed away in a clinic in London earlier in the day.
> “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” the statement read.
Buhari first rose to power as a military ruler following a coup in December 1983 and led Nigeria until he was ousted in 1985. Decades later, he returned to power through the ballot box, serving two terms as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His presidency was marked by a strong anti-corruption agenda, the fight against Boko Haram insurgency, and contentious economic policies, which drew both praise and criticism.
Details surrounding his illness or cause of death have not been disclosed as of press time. His remains are expected to be flown back to Nigeria for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Tributes have begun to pour in from Nigerian leaders, political associates, and citizens across the country.
