A 9-year-old girl named Rumaisa Sadiq has allegedly been raped and killed by a chemist she was taken to for malaria treatment.
According to the Kano State Commissioner of Women Affairs, Disabled and Children, Hajia Aisha Saji, the incident occurred in Jaba, Fanisau Unogo Local Government Area. Rumaisa’s father had taken her to the chemist’s shop for malaria medication, a common practice among some Nigerians who avoid going to hospitals due to high costs.
However, the chemist is accused of exploiting the child’s vulnerability and raping her, leading to her tragic death. Hajia Saji condemned the “animalistic” act and assured that the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will ensure justice is served.
“There must be justice for the little girl who lost her life simply because someone chose to display his animalistic instinct on her,” the Commissioner stated. She added that the quick dispensation of justice in this case is necessary to serve as a deterrent to others.
Despite alleged attempts by some individuals to interfere with the case, the Kano State Government has vowed to follow up the matter in court until a conclusive end is reached. This horrific incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of children and the urgent need to strengthen child protection measures in the country.
