City of Brampton Honours Segun Akanni with 2024 Arts Acclaim Award

In a heartfelt celebration of creativity, cultural impact, and community leadership, Prince Segun Akanni has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Arts Acclaim Award by the City of Brampton. 

The honour was presented as part of the city’s annual Citizen Awards Program, a long-standing initiative recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions in areas such as sports, arts, community service, and civic leadership.

Since its inception in 1974, the Citizen Awards have showcased the achievements of countless Brampton residents who have positively influenced their community. Among the accolades, the Arts Acclaim Award is reserved for individuals whose artistic contributions have not only uplifted Brampton but have also gained provincial, national, or international recognition.

Prince Segun Akanni—renowned cultural ambassador, publisher, entrepreneur, and advocate for African arts and heritage—is the Convener of the Pan-Afrikan Drum Festival in Canada. He was honoured for his remarkable efforts in promoting African culture and fostering diaspora engagement through the arts. His leadership in spearheading multicultural initiatives and producing impactful artistic programs has significantly enriched Brampton’s cultural landscape while deepening global appreciation for African heritage.

The award selection committee commended Prince Akanni’s steadfast commitment to cultural preservation and innovation. Through platforms such as The African Heritage Magazine and the African Canadian Heritage Awards, he has consistently celebrated unsung heroes, inspired emerging artists, and built bridges across diverse communities.

Prince Akanni and fellow honorees were formally celebrated at a grand ceremony held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the Rose Theatre in Brampton. The event brought together community leaders, artists, family, and friends for an inspiring evening of recognition and reflection. The award was presented to him by Mayor Patrick Brown, alongside members of Brampton’s legislative council.

In his acceptance speech, Prince Akanni expressed heartfelt gratitude to the City of Brampton, Mayor Brown, the Citizen Awards Committee, Chair Councillor Keenan, Councillor Santos, and others. “This award is not just for me, but for every artist and cultural leader striving to keep our stories alive,” he said. “I’m humbled to be part of a city that values and celebrates the arts in such a meaningful way.”

As Brampton continues to champion diversity and inclusion through arts and culture, Prince Akanni’s recognition underscores the transformative power of storytelling, heritage, and artistic expression in shaping vibrant communities. His work exemplifies the essence of the Arts Acclaim Award—excellence in creativity that inspires others.
