A modular refinery in Imo State has begun operations, producing 600 million liters of fuel.
Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, has praised WalterSmith Modular Refinery for meeting the country's energy needs.
The refinery is located in Ibigwe, in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State. Lokpobiri, after touring the facility with Simbi Wabote, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), expressed his delight with WalterSmith and noted that modular refineries are the most efficient way to address Nigeria's energy problems. He also mentioned that state-owned refineries are still undergoing rehabilitation and it is his duty to ensure sufficient petroleum product supply until these refineries resume operations. He stated that the shortest path to addressing the energy problem is through modular refineries.
Lokpobiri emphasized the need to identify individuals with proven records of success rather than simply providing funds to those with modular refinery licenses, as some may misuse the funds. He expressed his determination to support more modular refineries.
Wabote, the NCDMB Executive Secretary, also expressed his satisfaction with the success of the modular refinery, highlighting that they have produced more than 600 million liters of various products and about 20 trucks leave the refinery daily.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NURPC) announced plans to ensure sufficient and regular supply of crude oil to upcoming refineries, summoning a meeting with 52 crude oil exploration and production companies. The Commission's Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Communications, Olaide Shonola, warned of consequences for undermining the process.
