Born Akorede Babatunde Okunola on August 7, 1969, King Saheed Osupa has earned his title as the "King of Fuji Music" through decades of dedication and innovation in the Nigerian music scene. Known for his unique fusion of Fuji and hip-hop, the prolific artist has become a cultural icon and a significant figure in the entertainment industry.
Saheed Osupa hails from the Mosafejo area of Ajegunle, Lagos State, but spent his formative years in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Growing up in a musically inclined family, with his father being a Wéré music artist and a distant cousin of renowned Fuji musician Ayinde Barrister, Osupa was destined for a life in music. His educational journey saw him graduate from Amuwo Odofin High School in Lagos in 1987, followed by obtaining a National Diploma in Business Administration from The Polytechnic, Ibadan in 1992. He later attended the American International College, where he studied Networking Operations.
Osupa kicked off his music career as a teenager in 1983, debuting with his first album, *Fuji Fa Disco*, followed by *Fuji Blues*. Over the years, he has released more than 40 studio albums, including the groundbreaking four-in-one album *Mr. Music*, which sold over 20 million copies worldwide and is celebrated as one of the most successful Fuji albums of the 20th century. In 2008, Osupa was officially crowned the "King of Fuji Music" by Ayinde Barrister, solidifying his status in the genre.
In addition to his Fuji roots, Osupa is recognized as the creator of "Hip Fuji." He released his first hip Fuji album, *Non-Stop*, on June 12, 2018, and has produced several hip-hop singles over the years. Notable tracks include "Vanakula" and "African Beauty," showcasing his versatility and appeal to a wider audience. In 2015, he earned a spot on The NET's list of "Most Successful Nigerian Musicians."
Osupa's talents extend beyond music; he has appeared in over 30 Yoruba films, further cementing his influence in the entertainment realm. His career has not been without its challenges, notably a rivalry with fellow Fuji artist Wasiu Alabi Pasuma. Their competition for supremacy in the Fuji genre sparked a series of popular releases from Osupa, continuously engaging his fan base and affirming his status in the industry.
