A 13-year-old student of St. Paul Primary School in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, has been arrested for allegedly threatening his classmates with a gun.
The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Baba Azare, disclosed this during a press conference in Uyo on Wednesday. According to him, police received a tip-off on January 30 and intervened at around 8 a.m., where they found the boy in possession of a locally-made pistol.
“The operatives of the command immediately swung into action, arrested the suspect, and recovered a locally-made pistol,” Azare said.
Upon interrogation, the boy admitted to having had the weapon since November 2024, revealing that he found it in a ward of his father’s bedroom. Consequently, the police have also taken his father into custody as investigations continue.
Azare confirmed that the suspect would face prosecution once investigations are completed. He further noted that law enforcement had arrested several other suspects involved in cult activities, illegal firearm possession, and drug offenses.
Reassuring the public, the Commissioner stated that the police would remain committed to tackling crime in the state. He also urged residents to continue providing useful information to help law enforcement maintain security.
