In a bold step toward addressing the interlinked challenges of gender inequality and climate change, the Martins Lydia Foundation (MLF), a non-governmental organization, has launched a new project titled RISE & THRIVE: Community-Led Action for Gender Equality and Climate Justice.
The initiative, unveiled in Lagelu and Akinyele Local Government Areas of Oyo State, aims to empower grassroots communities to address the dual crises of environmental degradation and gender-based injustice. By placing local voices at the forefront, the project is designed to foster community-led solutions that uplift women, promote climate resilience, and encourage systemic change.
A major highlight of the rollout was a stakeholder engagement meeting that brought together local leaders, gender equality advocates, and community representatives. The event emphasized inclusive dialogue and the importance of shared ownership in driving sustainable development efforts. Participants from communities including Olororo, Onile-Aro, Ojoo, and Olorunda showed strong support, symbolized by a signed commitment banner—a pledge to act, lead, and sustain the project's mission.
The RISE & THRIVE project has set clear objectives: raising awareness about the intersection of gender and climate justice, creating inclusive platforms for dialogue, and ensuring stakeholder buy-in for effective local implementation. The initiative also targets issues such as menstrual hygiene, access to clean water and sanitation (WASH), proper waste disposal and support for women farmers through climate-smart agricultural practices.
According to MLF, the goal is not only to break cycles of inequality and abuse but to build thriving, equitable communities where women and girls can lead change.
The foundation is calling on individuals, organizations, and institutions to join the movement and become part of the transformative journey. "Together, we can build communities that are resilient, inclusive, and just," MLF stated.
