The Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) has been summoned by the House of Representatives joint committee to provide CCTV footage of social media personality Bobrisky's stay in prison as part of the investigation into allegations of a N15 million bribe involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and NCS.
During an investigative hearing held on Monday, NCS Deputy Controller General Michael Benson detailed Bobrisky’s controversial 10-day transfer from the Medium Correctional Center to the Maximum Correctional Center located in Ikoyi. The committee, chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, expressed interest in viewing the CCTV footage related to Bobrisky’s imprisonment following revelations linked to bribery allegations surfaced through a leaked audio tape.
According to reports from SaharaReporters, the controversy ignited when it was alleged that Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, paid the EFCC N15 million in exchange for the dismissal of money laundering charges against him. Bobrisky had initially received a six-month prison sentence for manipulating currency, but accounts indicate he may not have served his full term.
Representatives from the EFCC and NCS attended the hearing, while the absence of Bobrisky was notably remarked upon. The committee pressed the NCS for clarification on whether it was standard procedure to accept gifts from inmates, to which NCS representatives responded in the negative.
In tandem with the House inquiry, the EFCC has initiated its own internal investigation concerning the bribery claims. Furthermore, the Minister of the Interior is also conducting a separate inquiry into allegations involving jail officials potentially accepting bribes from the internet personality.
Testimony during the hearing also involved Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, who initially hesitated to speak without Bobrisky present. Under pressure from committee members, he later agreed to provide his account. During his testimony, VeryDarkMan corroborated previous statements concerning Bobrisky and submitted various pieces of evidence, including audio recordings, chat logs, and transaction records, to support his claims.
The inquiry continues as the House committee seeks to uncover the truth behind the bribery allegations and the circumstances surrounding Bobrisky's time in custody.
