Peter Fregene, a former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, has passed away after a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his close friend and fellow ex-international, Segun Odegbami, in an emotional Facebook post on Sunday night, October 13.

Fregene, who had been on life support for the past week, died surrounded by his wife, Tina, and two of his children. Odegbami shared the sad news, stating, "A few minutes ago, Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, OLY, former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, passed on to meet his Creator."

In his heartfelt tribute, Odegbami expressed gratitude to those who rallied around Fregene during his illness, thanking them on behalf of Fregene's family, friends, and the broader Nigerian football community. "On behalf of all generations of Nigerian footballers, Olympians, sports persons… I say a big ‘thank you’," he wrote.

Known affectionately as "Apo," Fregene was a cherished icon in Nigerian football, remembered for his significant contributions to the national team. He is survived by his wife and children, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten by fans and fellow athletes alike.
