A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2 has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late renowned gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
Delivering the judgment on Monday, Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide, concluding that his actions directly caused the death of his wife on April 8, 2022. The court held that overwhelming evidence presented during the trial established that Peter subjected Osinachi to years of domestic abuse, which ultimately led to her death sentence.
The prosecution had alleged that Nwachukwu consistently assaulted his wife physically and emotionally, resulting in serious health complications. Medical reports and witness testimonies corroborated the claims, painting a grim picture of sustained domestic violence.
In her ruling, Justice Nwosu-Iheme described Nwachukwu's actions as "deliberate, heartless, and reprehensible," emphasizing that the court must uphold justice not only for Osinachi but also to send a clear message against domestic violence.
Family members and supporters of Osinachi, visibly emotional in court, expressed relief at the verdict, calling it a "step toward justice" for the beloved singer, whose voice had inspired millions.
Nwachukwu’s legal team is yet to announce whether they will appeal the judgment.
