Olamide Thomas & Seyi Tinubu

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and nurse, Olamide Thomas, who faces charges over controversial comments made in a Facebook video. The activist was arraigned on December 13 in Lagos on a three-count charge of cyberbullying.

Thomas is accused of making inflammatory remarks about Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi. According to the police, the activist stated in a video recorded after her October 20, 2024, arrest that “Mr. Seyi Tinubu will die this year.”

The charge sheet further alleges that Thomas knowingly used a computer system to transmit communications aimed at harassing and threatening the individuals mentioned. The prosecution claims her remarks were intended to instill fear and cause emotional harm.

One count of the charges reads:
“That you, OLAMIDE ABIODUN THOMAS, in 2024, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, intentionally transmitted a video through social media in which you made remarks in Yoruba stating that Mr. Seyi Tinubu will die this year, and that misfortune has befallen the Tinubu family, with the intent to bully, threaten, and harass Mr. Seyi Tinubu, causing him fear of death or harm, contrary to and punishable under Section 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.”

The second count accuses Thomas of threatening the Inspector-General of Police, while the third count alleges she made statements about the death of Muyiwa Adejobi's children.

Justice Nwite denied an oral bail application from Thomas's legal counsel and adjourned the case to December 30 for trial.
