A Texas teacher has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor student. Shawnee Nicole Despain, 26, who taught agricultural science at Rockdale High School, made headlines in November 2024 when details of the inappropriate relationship emerged.
Despain's case began when an investigation revealed she had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student. The situation escalated when it was discovered that Despain became pregnant, with DNA testing confirming that her husband was not the father of the child. Initially, she attempted to claim the baby as her husband's until the truth was revealed.
Authorities uncovered evidence on Despain’s devices, including messages that suggested grooming behavior and explicit footage shared via Snapchat. She turned herself in to law enforcement on November 7, 2023, facing charges including child pornography and having an improper relationship with a student.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, which could have resulted in up to 20 years in prison, Despain was placed on a 10-year probation by District Judge John W. Youngblood. She also forfeited her teaching license, but will not be required to register as a sex offender.
Milam County District Attorney Brian Price expressed his discontent with the ruling, arguing that Despain should have faced prison time. He emphasized that individuals in positions of authority over students should be held to a higher standard, noting that the outcome might have been different if the roles were reversed, involving a male teacher and a female student.
“This young man’s life has been affected significantly by her actions,” Price stated. “People in positions of trust should face serious consequences for abusing that trust.”
