The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the death of Adeyemi Adewale, a footballer from the Ilesa West Local Government Area team, who tragically passed away during a match in Osogbo, the state capital.
The incident occurred on Thursday during the Adeleke Memorial Cup final held at Ataoja School of Science. According to reports, Adewale, 29, collapsed on the pitch and was immediately rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital. However, doctors at the hospital confirmed him dead on arrival.
Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, disclosed in a statement that investigations into the incident have commenced. She further revealed that Adewale’s remains have been deposited at the Uniosun Teaching Hospital morgue.
The football community and the local government have expressed shock and sadness over the sudden loss of the promising player.
