During a recent address to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members at their passing-out ceremony at the Lagos Orientation Camp, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde recounted his reaction when his daughter complained about being bullied at camp.
Reflecting on their conversation, Governor Makinde said he advised his daughter, "Welcome to the real world where there is no protection and you have to do whatever it is that they are doing out there." He emphasized that his own experience in the NYSC program, which he completed 34 years ago, provided him with insight into the challenges faced by young people today.
"My daughter is among you today, which reveals that some of us in leadership are also human," he stated, acknowledging the shared experiences between him and the corps members. The governor expressed surprise at his daughter’s four-week stint at the camp, given that she initially expressed a desire to stay only for one night.
Despite the challenges, he noted that she found enjoyment in her time at the camp, though she mentioned instances of bullying. Governor Makinde's candid remarks served to connect with the youth as they embark on their next chapter after completing the NYSC program.
