Tragedy struck on Sunday in the Odo Eran Idiroko area of Ogun State as gunmen stormed the Celestial Church of Christ’s Eagle Parish, killing Prophet Yomi Adetula, 54, during a service.
The attack occurred around 10:30 AM, sending worshippers into panic. Witnesses reported that three armed men entered the church along Old Baggage Road, wielding a double-barreled gun. The attackers targeted Prophet Adetula, firing at him before fleeing toward the border area.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, Omolola Odutola. “Around 10:30 AM on January 19, 2025, the Idiroko divisional police officer received a report about a murder at the Celestial Church along Old Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko,” Odutola stated.
Police officers who arrived at the scene found Prophet Adetula's body lying face-up in a pool of blood. His white Celestial garment was soaked, and his body bore bullet wounds. Officers also noted severe head injuries caused by an axe, confirming the brutality of the attack.
The assailants reportedly caused chaos during the shooting before fleeing. No arrests have been made, but the police assured the public that efforts to apprehend the suspects are ongoing.
Prophet Adetula’s body has been taken to the General Hospital morgue in Ilaro for an autopsy and further investigation.
The police have urged residents and church members to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as they work to bring the culprits to justice.
