Ghanaian President John Mahama

In a recent interview, Ghana's former President, John Dramani Mahama, unveiled a significant aspect of his personal history by sharing his deep connection to Nigeria. Mahama revealed that his stepmother, who raised him during his formative years, hails from Offa in Kwara State, a place he fondly considers his Nigerian hometown.

This connection to Nigeria stems from a challenging period in his childhood. Following a military coup in Ghana, Mahama’s father sought refuge in Nigeria, resulting in Mahama living with his stepmother in Offa for several years. This experience allowed him to develop a close bond with the community and immerse himself in Nigerian culture.

Mahama’s ties to Offa were further solidified when the Oloffa of Offa bestowed upon him the honorary chieftaincy title of Aare Atolase of the Offa Kingdom. This honor symbolizes the cultural bridge between Ghana and Nigeria, as well as Mahama’s personal relationship with the region.

Reflecting on his heritage, Mahama stated, “My stepmother is Nigerian, and she raised me. She comes from Offa in Kwara State. When there was a coup in Ghana, my father lived in exile in Nigeria, and I had to live with my stepmother for many years in Offa. I know Offa quite well.”
