An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of Islamic High School, Basorun.

Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin approved their bail applications during a ruling on Monday, setting bail at ₦10 million each with two sureties of the same amount. Additionally, the court directed that Agidigbo FM must refrain from broadcasting any news related to the ongoing trial.

The defendants had filed their bail applications last Tuesday, with their legal team arguing that they posed no flight risk and were prepared to cooperate with the investigation. However, Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed the applications, citing the gravity of the charges and the need to ensure accountability for the victims.

The three are facing a four-count charge, including negligence and criminal conspiracy, in connection with a tragic stampede at the Islamic High School, Basorun, during a children’s funfair. The incident claimed the lives of approximately 35 children.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, emphasized the importance of holding those responsible accountable but stated he had no objection to the suspects being granted bail.

The court initially ordered the defendants to remain in custody until the ruling on their bail applications, which has now been resolved.
