The leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has taken another twist as former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa claims that Mojisola Meranda has resigned from her position as Speaker. Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Obasa stated that Meranda announced her resignation during a meeting with Lagos APC leaders in Marina.
Obasa, who was removed by 36 out of 40 lawmakers, insists his ousting was invalid. "I have never been removed. I am not against removal, but it must follow the rules of the House and the Constitution," he asserted. On Thursday, he arrived at the Assembly under heavy security and presided over a plenary session, reportedly attended by only four members.
However, Meranda’s camp has denied the resignation claims. An aide to the Speaker dismissed the report as "fake news," affirming that she remains in charge of the House. The aide accused Obasa’s loyalists of spreading misinformation to undermine Meranda’s leadership.
The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 36 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa and installed Meranda as Speaker. Since then, tensions have continued to escalate, with party leaders and other stakeholders attempting to mediate the dispute.
With both Obasa and Meranda maintaining their claims to the Speakership, the true leadership of the Lagos Assembly remains in contention. As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the next steps in resolving the ongoing power struggle.
