The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has dismissed reports claiming that telecommunications tariffs will increase in January 2025, labeling them as false and misleading. The Commission has urged subscribers to disregard the rumors.

A senior NCC official clarified that any changes to tariffs must follow the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA), which mandates transparency, stakeholder consultations, and due process before approval.

“These rumors are baseless and misleading,” the official stated. “The NCC remains committed to protecting consumers and ensuring that any tariff adjustments are communicated transparently. Subscribers can rest assured that no such increase has been approved.”

The Commission also called on journalists and industry stakeholders to verify information before publication to prevent unnecessary panic. It emphasized its dedication to consumer protection and maintaining stability in the telecommunications sector, assuring the public that updates would only come through official channels.

The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) also refuted the claims. ATCIS National President, Mr. Sina Bilesanmi, disclosed that the association had sought clarification from the NCC on December 24, 2024.

“The NCC confirmed there is no truth to claims of call charges rising to N15.40 per minute from N11, SMS charges increasing to N5.60, or 1GB of data costing N1,400 instead of N1,000,” Bilesanmi said.

He assured subscribers that any necessary tariff changes would involve consultations with stakeholders, including ATCIS. “There is no cause for alarm,” he added.

Both the NCC and ATCIS reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding consumer interests and urged Nigerians to rely on verified information from credible sources.
