Folorunsho Alakija, the 73-year-old founder and Executive Vice Chairman of Famfa Oil, has reportedly lost her vision due to complications stemming from a near air mishap, according to medical sources close to her case.
The Nigerian billionaire, whose net worth was estimated at $1 billion by Forbes in 2020, is said to have experienced a sudden spike in blood pressure during the incident, which occurred while she was traveling with her husband, Modupe Alakija. The traumatic event reportedly triggered a decline in her eyesight, which worsened over time until she completely lost her vision.
Sources revealed to Sahara Reporters that the incident deeply affected Alakija, prompting her to purchase a private jet to avoid traveling on commercial flights with her husband. Despite this precaution, her vision continued to deteriorate.
“She had a near air mishap with her husband on board, and her blood pressure reportedly shot up, affecting her eyes,” a source disclosed. “She has been having eyesight issues, but instead of seeking medical treatment, she chose to focus on starting a church to help her. Now, she can’t see.”
Alakija, a prominent businesswoman and philanthropist, founded the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International, which began as a small fellowship in her home in 2004. On her 69th birthday, she was ordained as an Apostle.
Ranked as the 87th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes in 2015, Alakija remains one of Africa’s most influential figures. Her reported blindness has sparked concern among her followers and the global community, as details about her health continue to emerge.
