A 28-year-old Nigerian woman developed severe kidney failure after excessive use of Vitamin C and other skin-enhancing supplements. The case, shared by medical doctor @drbelswellness on X, highlights a growing concern over kidney-related illnesses caused by supplement misuse among young people.

According to the doctor, the woman had no prior history of smoking, hypertension, or diabetes, yet her kidney function deteriorated rapidly. Medical tests later revealed she had kidney stones, which led to severe infections and hydronephrosis. Despite receiving treatment, her condition worsened to the point where she required a kidney transplant.

Her sister turned out to be a compatible donor and selflessly donated one of her kidneys to save her life. However, an analysis of the removed kidneys revealed a shocking discovery—high levels of oxalates, a substance linked to excessive Vitamin C consumption.

Excessive Supplements and Kidney Damage

“We had a young 28-year-old woman experiencing kidney failure with no known risk factors like smoking, hypertension, or diabetes,” the doctor explained. “Investigations showed kidney stones that led to infections and hydronephrosis. Despite treatment, her condition worsened, and she eventually needed a kidney transplant. Her sister was a match and donated a kidney, which saved her life.”

Following the transplant, doctors examined her kidneys and found an alarming amount of oxalates embedded within them. Further inquiries revealed that she had been consuming large amounts of Vitamin C, mixed with Glutathione powder and taken as pills and infusions, all in pursuit of glowing skin. Shockingly, she continued taking the supplements even while undergoing treatment for kidney failure.

“This was why her condition deteriorated so quickly,” the doctor noted. “Her sister is now left with one kidney because of an avoidable mistake. This young woman almost lost her life. Sadly, we see similar cases where patients don’t survive.”

A Growing Concern Among Young People

With the increasing popularity of skincare trends and supplement use, medical experts warn that excessive Vitamin C intake—beyond 2,000 mg per day—can be dangerous. “Vitamin C can help your skin glow, but overuse can severely damage your kidneys,” the doctor emphasized.

“We need to spread awareness. Many people take supplements without understanding the risks. This woman and her family had no idea what harm they were causing. How would her sister feel, knowing she now has only one kidney due to an avoidable mistake?”

As kidney-related illnesses rise among young people, medical professionals urge caution when using supplements, emphasizing that moderation and proper medical guidance are essential.
