Nigerian filmmaker and author, Oreofe Williams, has shared his perspective on the ongoing dispute between Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin and gospel singer Tope Alabi over a controversial birthday performance.

The drama began when Anjorin publicly criticized Tope Alabi for allegedly refusing to perform at a birthday celebration after reportedly receiving ₦4 million. Anjorin, in a viral video, accused the singer of unprofessionalism, claiming her husband, Soji Alabi, had built her brand from humble beginnings.

In a statement titled “Concerning Evang. Tope Alabi and Lizzy Anjorin’s Birthday Surprise: An Unfortunate Conundrum”, Oreofe Williams provided clarification on the matter, disputing the payment amount and revealing behind-the-scenes details.

Williams stated that only ₦2.5 million—not ₦4 million—was paid to the Alabis, and that the fee was significantly discounted due to his personal intervention. He explained that the surprise performance was arranged by a filmmaker who never disclosed the identity of the celebrant, creating confusion and suspicion.

“The filmmaker said he wanted to surprise ‘someone he cherishes a lot,’ but did not reveal a name,” Williams said. “Uncle Soji [Alabi] was initially hesitant due to the low amount offered, but eventually agreed to honor the request because of my appeal, even offering a 70% discount.”

However, upon arrival at the venue, the Alabis were reportedly surprised and upset to discover the identity of the celebrant—Lizzy Anjorin. Feeling misled, they chose to refund the entire ₦2.5 million fee and leave the venue.

Williams questioned the motive behind keeping the celebrant's identity hidden. “Why was the name of a public figure withheld? Why was the amount negotiated down under false impressions?” he asked.

He emphasized that the Alabis’ decision to leave was not out of disrespect for Anjorin but rather a reaction to feeling deceived. “They were not given the privilege of a choice guided by conscience,” he noted. “The money was paid in three tranches and fully refunded. Any report quoting ₦4 million is false.”

Williams concluded by calling for integrity in business dealings. “Transparency and honesty are crucial. You don’t surprise a public figure by keeping their identity secret—and end up surprising the performers instead.”
