The Oyo State Government has confirmed the arrest of the organizers behind a children’s Christmas party in Ibadan, where a tragic stampede claimed the lives of about 30 children.

The devastating incident occurred on Wednesday morning at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The event was reportedly organized by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, a radio station owned by Oriyomi Hamzat.

Governor Seyi Makinde, in an official statement, announced that the primary organizers have been detained and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.

“Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School Bashorun, the venue of an event organized for families. Sadly, a stampede at the venue has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries,” the statement read.

“This is a deeply sorrowful day for us in Oyo State. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the parents whose joy has been turned into mourning. Steps have been taken to ensure no further casualties occur, including deploying security agents to restore order and medical personnel to provide immediate assistance. The event has been terminated, and attendees have been safely escorted out.”

Governor Makinde further assured residents that those responsible for the disaster would be held accountable.

“While investigations are ongoing, the primary organizers of the event have been taken into custody. I assure our people that anyone directly or indirectly involved in this tragedy will face the full weight of the law. Please remain calm as the security agencies continue their investigation.”

The governor concluded by expressing his condolences to the bereaved families. “Our hearts are with the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amen.”
