Niyi Peter, a pastor from Osun State, appeared before a Chief Magistrate's Court on Thursday, facing charges of defamation related to popular gospel artist Bunmi Akinnaanu, known by her stage name Omije Ojumi. The case centers on allegations that Peter posted a derogatory comment about Akinnaanu on social media.

The three-count charge claims that in April 2024, Peter posted a picture of Akinnaanu on WhatsApp, labeling it with the phrase "pr0stitute song," which ignited backlash from her fans and other artists. According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred in the Oke-Odo area of Osogbo.

In addition to the social media post, Peter is accused of sending a threatening voice note to Akinnaanu, declaring that she “will perish and never rise again.” These actions are alleged to have damaged Akinnaanu's reputation and potentially incited unrest among her followers.

The charges against Peter violate various sections of the Criminal Code in Osun State, specifically sections 373, 88, and 249(D). Upon being arraigned, Peter pleaded not guilty to all counts. His counsel, Mr. Okobe Najite, requested bail for the pastor.

Magistrate Dr. Olusegun Ayilara granted bail, setting the amount at N1 million and requiring that two sureties be civil servants. The court has scheduled the next hearing for Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

In a separate development, Pastor Mike Ademisoye Babamojigbare urged both parties to seek an amicable resolution to the dispute.
