The Management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of five students in a fatal road accident that occurred on Sunday.

A statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, on Monday confirmed that the incident took place around the Balogun Area, before Unity School, Ikire. The accident involved a luxurious bus traveling from Ibadan and an 18-passenger bus from Osogbo. Reports from the Nigerian Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicate that a head-on collision between the two vehicles led to multiple fatalities.

“Our University Management, upon receiving this distressing news, swiftly dispatched a team to the scene to identify and support any of our students involved in the accident,” Adesoji stated.

Tragically, five students lost their lives in the crash. The deceased students have been identified as:

Olagbemide Dotun, 200-level Software Engineering

Suleiman Farouq Adedayo, 400-level Law

Ogundare Pelumi, 300-level Public Health

Ogundare Elijah, 100-level Mechanical Engineering

Olawuyi Mary, 200-level Nursing

However, one student, Olagbemide Damilola, a 200-level Medicine and Surgery student, survived the accident and is currently receiving medical attention.

The Nigerian Police confirmed that a total of ten people lost their lives in the incident. The university management has assured the public that they are working closely with relevant authorities to gather more details on the circumstances surrounding the accident.

In response to the tragedy, UNIOSUN has pledged to provide moral and logistical support to the bereaved families, including assistance with funeral arrangements.

“This tragic loss has deeply shaken our University community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the deceased. We urge our students, staff, and the entire university community to remain calm and supportive during this difficult time,” the statement added.

The university has committed to monitoring the situation closely and providing necessary updates. Meanwhile, the management extends heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and prays for their strength and solace in this period of grief.
