President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate on Friday seeking support for Nigeria’s military intervention in Niger Republic.

The letter was read at plenary by the Senate president, Godswill Akpabio.

The president also demanded a total blockade of the sea and air routes to the country following the military coup.

This decision followed a military overthrowing the democratically elected government in Niger Republic a few weeks ago.

It also seized assets of all politically exposed and senior persons of the government of Niger in the country based on the ECOWAS resolution.

President Tinubu had also sent a high-powered delegation to the country to meet with the coup leaders on Thursday.

The delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) only met with representatives of the junta.

Subsequently, Niger severed ties with Nigeria, Togo, France, its coloniser, and the United States.

Putin made the announcement during the second and final day of the second Russia-Africa Summit, saying “We are developing partnerships in military and military-technical cooperation with more than 40 African states to strengthen the defence capabilities of the countries.”

“African states received a wide range of weapons and technology, some for free. Some of these deliveries are provided on a gratuitous basis with the aim of enhancing the security and sovereignty of the countries.”

Putin also announced that Russia would provide assistance to the countries in their efforts to free themselves from the “vestiges of colonialism.”
