A 27 year old trainee herbalist identified as Ifagbenga Taiwo, has been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of his 41-day-old son, identified as Ifakorede Ajani. The alleged incident took place in the Keesi area of Adatan, Abeokuta, on Monday.
According to reports, the child's mother, Raimat Wasilat, placed the infant on a bed while she stepped outside to wash clothes. Upon returning inside, she discovered her son’s lifeless body with a slit throat, triggering a frantic call for help. Neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing Wasilat’s cries.
Mrs. Adewumi, a local resident, explained the chaotic scene, revealing that the suspected assailant had entered through a wooden window to commit the act. "When we entered the room, we realized someone had entered through the window and slit the throat of the baby," she said, pointing to the area where Wasilat had been washing clothes.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, stating that the mother explicitly accused Taiwo of the heinous act. "At about 14:00 hrs, we received a report from the Iteesi Itoko area regarding the slaughter of a two-month-old infant inside a room where his mother had placed him," she reported.
Odutola added that the investigation revealed the mother strongly suspected her husband intended to use their child's blood for ritual purposes. Following the arrest, police collected evidence from the crime scene and transported the baby’s body to the hospital for an autopsy.
