Lanre Ogundipe, prominent leader of the IBILE G-7 group and former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has written an open letter addressing the Ibadan chieftaincy crisis.
In the letter, Ogundipe discussed his role and stance on the controversial introduction of beaded crowns in Ibadan by the late Governor Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi. Ogundipe stated that his views on the matter had placed him at odds with certain powerful blocs within Ibadan and beyond, but he maintains that he has no regrets for his position.
"Even those who consider themselves repository of knowledge on Ibadan matters, marveled at the spate of my write-ups, which demonstrated that one was abreast of the development and definitely not a push over as they claimed in some quarters," Ogundipe wrote.
He emphasized that he is not the type to be hired or induced to do someone's bidding, as he is always committed to the cause of justice. Ogundipe proudly stated that the preservation of Ibadan's heritage has always been his priority since his youthful days.
The veteran journalist acknowledged the roles played by prominent Ibadan elders, including the Asiwaju of Ibadanland, Chief Jacob Olabode Amoo, Archbishop Makinde, Alhaji Y.K. Abass, Chief Bayo Oyero, and General Niyi Ajewole, in resolving the recent Obaship crisis. He also commended the intervention of the current Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Abiodun Makinde, in the matter.
Ogundipe concluded his letter by welcoming the return of High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja to the "royal seat of honour as a crown-head chief" in Ibadanland, expressing hope that the crisis has been resolved.
