Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – A woman identified as Ogechi Okechukwu has been apprehended by authorities for allegedly masterminding a fraudulent medical fundraising scheme in collaboration with a doctor. The scam, which duped unsuspecting social media users out of thousands of naira, involved Okechukwu falsely claiming she required urgent surgery.
The scheme gained traction after popular Facebook influencer Uwaoma Susan Joseph shared the appeal, believing it to be genuine. Joseph’s involvement helped amplify the fundraiser, drawing significant donations from well-meaning individuals. However, investigations later revealed that the entire operation was a carefully orchestrated fraud.
Authorities uncovered incriminating evidence, including conversations between Okechukwu and the doctor, on her mobile phone. These exchanges exposed the elaborate nature of the scam, prompting her arrest. Investigators are now working to determine the full scope of the operation, including identifying other potential accomplices and victims.
The case has ignited widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding stricter measures to combat digital fraudsters who exploit public generosity for personal gain.
Uwaoma Susan Joseph, who unknowingly aided the scam, expressed shock and disappointment upon learning the truth. She stated that she had been misled into supporting the fundraiser and condemned the actions of those involved.
Okechukwu remains in custody as law enforcement agencies continue their investigation. Authorities have vowed to pursue all leads to ensure justice is served and to prevent similar scams from exploiting public trust in the future.
