●Late Mrs. Favour Onyedika and her husband interviewed
The owner of Labech Hospital and Maternity in Owerri, Imo State, has been taken into police custody following allegations of medical negligence that led to the deaths of a woman, Mrs. Favour Onyedika, and her baby during childbirth.
According to the grieving husband, the so-called surgeon who performed the Caesarean section (CS) relied on a YouTube tutorial while conducting the procedure. Despite attempts to deliver the baby, both mother and child tragically lost their lives.
The devastated husband recounted his experience, saying, "Right in my presence, they were using their phones to watch a YouTube video on how to perform surgery. I lost my wife and my baby during the process."
The incident gained public attention when Nollywood film producer Stanley Ontop shared the story on Instagram. He revealed that someone tipped him off about the situation, prompting him to investigate the hospital.
Reports indicate that the hospital lacked essential medical facilities such as a blood bank and sterilization equipment. Authorities have since arrested the hospital owner, while the surgeon involved has allegedly refused to report to the police.
Human rights activists, including Ontop Cares Human Rights Group, are now involved in ensuring a thorough investigation. The group stated that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, efforts by the suspect’s family to secure her release from police custody have reportedly been resisted by those seeking justice for the deceased.
The case continues to unfold as calls for accountability grow louder.
