Oluwatosin Ibiwoye, a taxi driver in Lagos, is saving a significant amount on fuel costs after converting her car to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Ibiwoye shared her experience, explaining that she no longer uses premium motor spirit (petrol) in her vehicle. Instead, she has installed a cylinder to use the more affordable CNG, which costs just N200 per standard cubic foot at the NNPC CNG/Autogas facility in Ilasamaja, Lagos.

"What used to cost me N28,000 in PMS (petrol) now costs only N4,100 with CNG," Ibiwoye said. She expressed delight at no longer having to queue for petrol or worry about price fluctuations, saying it has given her "peace of mind."

The NNPC and Transit Gas Nigeria Limited recently commissioned the 5.2 MMSCFD CNG/Autogas facility in Ilasamaja as part of the government's efforts to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal and encourage more Nigerians to convert their vehicles to CNG.

Another driver, Wale Adeogun, told Legit.ng that he paid just N1,900 for CNG at the facility, compared to the N10,000 he would have spent on petrol. "This is much better compared to petrol or diesel," he said, adding that his only concern is having to visit the facility every time to refuel.

The NNPC has plans to build similar CNG/Autogas facilities in 100 locations across the country, while the government is mandating more filling stations to set up CNG stations, providing Nigerians with more options to convert their vehicles and save on fuel costs.
