A woman who filmed a police officer allegedly raping a 17-year-old suspect has been detained alongside the officer involved. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, involves Sergeant Abraham Uzuobor of the Edo State Police, who is accused of the assault, and Inspector Edith Eduma, who witnessed the act.
According to a preliminary investigation report obtained by FIJ, the incident occurred on the night of October 10, 2024, when Uzuobor allegedly removed the young girl from her cell and took her to the administrative office, where he assaulted her. Eduma, who was the charge room officer, noticed the absence of the cell keys and grew suspicious. Upon searching for the missing suspect, she discovered Uzuobor inappropriately engaging with the girl and recorded the incident.
Despite witnessing the crime, Eduma chose not to report it to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO). Instead, she opted to call her husband and two other police officers, ultimately accepting N45,000 from Uzuobor in an attempt to conceal the assault.
The report reveals that on October 11, Eduma contacted Uzuobor again, demanding N1 million to keep silent about the incident. When he failed to meet her demand, she released the video on social media, prompting a swift response from the police.
Both Uzuobor and Eduma are now in custody and facing orderly room trials at the area command for their roles in the case. Meanwhile, the police report does not indicate any action being taken against Eduma’s husband or the other officers who were present during the incident.
