A decomposing body was discovered in a drainage system on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) campus on Friday evening.
The grisly discovery was made by students returning from evening lectures near the UNN stadium junction and Eni-Njoku Boys Hostel, along the busy road leading to the back of the campus.
According to reports, the unidentified corpse was wrapped and dumped in the drainage system, emitting a strong odor that indicated it had been there for some time.
The UNN security department was promptly alerted and arrived at the scene, taking the body to the University medical center morgue and dispersing the large crowd that had gathered to witness the grisly sight.
Investigations revealed that a female 100-level student from the Department of Medical Laboratory (Med Lab) had been missing since Tuesday after a Chem 171 practical session. The body found in the drainage system is believed to be that of the missing student.
“The body was in a state of decomposition, suggesting it had been there for a while,” said a security official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Authorities are currently probing whether the body was dumped at the scene by unknown individuals or if it had gone unnoticed for some time. Students who witnessed the incident captured pictures and videos, which have since gone viral on social media platforms.
The University administration has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and that more details are expected to emerge as the investigation unfolds. Additional security measures may also be implemented to ensure the safety of students on campus.
