Automatic and manual gearboxes are two types of transmissions used in vehicles, each with its own set of differences as revealed by Mechanicbase.

Operation: The most obvious difference between automatic and manual gearboxes is how they are operated. In a manual gearbox, the driver manually selects the gear using a clutch pedal and gear shifter, whereas in an automatic gearbox, the gear changes are handled automatically by the transmission system without the need for driver intervention.

Ease of use: Automatic gearboxes are generally easier to use as they do not require the driver to manually shift gears. This makes them more convenient, especially in heavy traffic or urban driving conditions, as the driver can focus on other aspects of driving without worrying about gear changes. Manual gearboxes, on the other hand, require the driver to coordinate clutch pedal operation and gear shifting, which can be challenging for some drivers, especially those with limited experience.
Fuel efficiency: Manual gearboxes are generally considered more fuel-efficient than automatic gearboxes. This is because manual gearboxes allow the driver to have more control over the engine’s RPM (revolutions per minute) and shift gears according to their driving style and road conditions, potentially leading to better fuel economy. Automatic gearboxes, on the other hand, may not always select the most fuel-efficient gear, as they rely on preset programming to determine gear changes.

Performance: Automatic gearboxes are often associated with smoother and more seamless gear changes, which can result in a smoother driving experience. Manual gearboxes, on the other hand, require the driver to manually engage the clutch and shift gears, which can result in more jerky gear changes, especially for inexperienced drivers. However, manual gearboxes do offer more control over the vehicle’s performance, allowing the driver to downshift for more engine braking or upshift for more power when needed.
However, both types of gearboxes have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between them depends on personal preferences, driving habits, and specific driving conditions.
