Introduction

The role of public affairs analysts in nation-building cannot be overstated. In the broadcasting industry, they serve as watchdogs, guiding society through critical analyses of government policies and societal issues. However, the effectiveness of public affairs analysts depends on their knowledge, logic, fairness, public-spiritedness, and command of language.

Public affairs analysis is not for the uninformed, immature, or those seeking personal gains. Rather, it is for individuals committed to the common good, striving to create a better society. As such, it is a sacred responsibility that must be handled with integrity and purpose.

The Need for Public Affairs Analysts in Governance

Thomas Hobbes, in Leviathan (1651), argued that humans are inherently selfish and require governance to prevent chaos. However, as Lord Acton observed, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Leaders, like citizens, are prone to excesses and need to be held accountable.

Governments use coercion to regulate citizens, while citizens rely on public opinion to keep the government in check. Active citizenship, which includes participation in governance and policy discussions, is essential for a thriving democracy. Public affairs analysts play a crucial role in this process by ensuring accountability and guiding societal discourse.

Roles of Public Affairs Analysts

Public affairs analysts contribute to nation-building through the following functions:

1. Telling the Other Narrative

Government officials often dominate public discourse, shaping narratives to suit their interests. Public affairs analysts provide alternative perspectives, ensuring that misinformation is challenged and the public is well-informed.

For instance, the Federal Ministry of Works records show that the Abeokuta-Ibadan road dualization contract was awarded in 2010 for ₦3.9 billion, with completion expected by 2012, later extended to 2016. However, as of today, the project has not begun. Public affairs analysts highlight such discrepancies to prevent government deception.

2. Setting the Agenda for Society

Governments do not always prioritize policies that reflect the people’s needs. Public affairs analysts, with their closer ties to society, help set the agenda by drawing attention to critical issues.

In the past 20 months, Nigeria has witnessed various reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, forex liberalization, increased energy tariffs, and rising education costs. While reforms are necessary, they have caused hardship. Public affairs analysts must push for policies that balance economic transformation with social welfare.

3. Calling the Government to Order

Leaders may start with good intentions but can become distracted by personal or political interests. Public affairs analysts play a corrective role, reminding leaders of their responsibilities and urging them to remain focused on governance.

4. Highlighting Institutional Failures

Strong institutions are the backbone of a stable society. When institutions weaken, societies decline. Public affairs analysts must advocate for institutional reforms to ensure governance remains effective.

5. Conscientizing Society

Public affairs analysts shape public opinion and influence behavior. By raising awareness of critical issues, they help foster an informed and engaged citizenry that actively participates in governance and societal development.

Challenges in Nigeria: Are Public Affairs Analysts Truly Serving the Nation?

The most crucial quality of a public affairs analyst is public-spiritedness. Unfortunately, many in Nigeria have turned public analysis into a tool for personal gain. Rather than serving the public good, some analysts seek political patronage and financial benefits.

A notable example is the story of Jarfa, a public affairs analyst who constantly criticized former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai. One day, the governor invited him to the Government House and gave him ₦200,000 to hand over to a tricycle (Keke Napep) rider who had brought him. Instead of giving the full amount, Jarfa kept ₦198,000 and only gave the rider ₦2,000. When confronted, the governor exposed his dishonesty and dismissed him, demonstrating how some analysts use their platforms for personal enrichment rather than genuine advocacy.

Because many public affairs analysts operate with ulterior motives, their criticisms and suggestions are often ignored by those in power. This weakens the influence of public discourse and reduces its effectiveness in holding leaders accountable.

The Exception: Dr. Oyebade Oyedepo

Amidst the self-serving analysts, Dr. Oyebade Oyedepo stands out. For 20 years, he has consistently advocated for a better Nigerian society, using knowledge, logic, and fairness to address national issues. Unlike many others, he does not merely highlight problems—he also provides solutions. His approach is constructive rather than destructive, making him a respected and influential voice in public discourse.

With more public affairs analysts like Dr. Oyedapo—who genuinely seek the common good—Nigeria has a better chance of improving governance and nation-building. These individuals will continue to hold leaders accountable and push for policies that benefit the people.

Conclusion

Public affairs analysts play a vital role in shaping public discourse, holding leaders accountable, and setting the agenda for national development. However, in Nigeria, many analysts prioritize personal interests over the common good, reducing their credibility and impact.

For public affairs analysis to contribute meaningfully to nation-building, analysts must embrace knowledge, fairness, and public-spiritedness. By following the example of individuals like Dr. Oyebade Oyedepo, public affairs analysts can help Nigeria achieve better governance and societal development.
