Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the former head of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, has been dismissed from his position and is currently on his way to Malabo’s Black Beach Central Prison to await trial.

He faces charges of corruption and embezzlement of $1.65 billion. The prison he’s being held at is notorious for its harsh conditions, overcrowding, and lack of basic amenities.

Engonga was embroiled in a national scandal after explicit recordings featuring him with multiple women surfaced. The recordings, which were discovered during a corruption investigation, allegedly include encounters with married women, among them the wife of the Presidential security head and Ebang’s own sister-in-law. The scandal has intensified scrutiny on the conduct of Equatorial Guinea’s officials.
