Family Announces Burial Date of Late Olubadan, Oba Olakunlehin

Ibadan is set to bid a final farewell to the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Frederick Akinloye Iyanda Owolabi Olakunlehin, whose burial has been scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025.

The revered monarch, who died on Monday, July 7, at the age of 90, will be honoured with a week-long series of events celebrating his life of service, leadership, and commitment to unity and youth development in Ibadan and Oyo State.

According to a programme released to the press, the obsequies will begin on Monday, August 4, and culminate in the funeral service on Friday, August 8, at the Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, Ibadan.

Venue: Olubadan Stadium

Time: 2:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday, August 6: Table Tennis Tournament (Finals)

Venue: Table Tennis Hall, Lekan Salami Stadium

Time: 10:00 a.m.

Olubadan Olakunlehin Football Cup Final

Venue: Olubadan Stadium

Time: 3:00 p.m.

Final Obsequies

Thursday, August 7: Service of Songs

Venue: Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan

Time: 4:00 p.m.

Friday, August 8: Funeral Service

Venue: Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, Ibadan

Time: 10:00 a.m.

Oba Olakunlehin is survived by children, grandchildren, and siblings, who, alongside Ibadan residents and dignitaries from across Nigeria, will honour his legacy of humility, peace, and integrity.

His reign, though brief, is remembered for its wisdom and firm dedication to the cultural heritage and wellbeing of the people of Ibadanland. Tributes have continued to pour in from traditional institutions, political leaders, and citizens in anticipation of a befitting burial.
