In a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday, an unidentified woman lost her life, while two other individuals sustained injuries after an articulated vehicle crashed into pedestrians on the Onitsha-Asaba bridgehead. The cause of the accident has been attributed to brake failure.
According to an eyewitness at the scene, the driver of the vehicle experienced brake failure while descending the River Niger bridge en route to Asaba. As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle, ultimately colliding with pedestrians along the roadside.
Confirming the crash, C. A Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer of Public Education at the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, issued a statement on the matter. Iyiegbuniwe stated, “The crash occurred today, April 4, 2024, at approximately 3:20hrs along the Onitsha-Asaba Bridgehead. It involved an articulated white and green Mercedes-Benz vehicle with registration number NKE25LG.” The vehicle, due to brake failure, struck pedestrians, resulting in two injuries and one fatality.
Upon arrival at the scene, FRSC personnel promptly transported the two injured individuals to Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, while the deceased were taken to Toronto Mortuary. Sector Commander RS5.3 Awka, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, expressed heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims. He further advised motorists to diligently maintain their vehicles and strictly adhere to traffic regulations.
