A tragic incident has unfolded in Ogun State, where a housemaid identified as Ruth was murdered by gunmen believed to be linked to a kidnapping syndicate. The assailants are reportedly targeting Mr. Lanre Idowu, who played a crucial role in the rescue of High Chief Omotayo Tajudeen, a traditional ruler abducted in March 2021.
Lanre Idowu was instrumental in orchestrating the delivery of the ransom demanded by the kidnappers during the ordeal and has since been involved in efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice. Following the rescue of Chief Tajudeen, which involved extensive police investigations and community support, Idowu’s commitment to enhancing local security put him in the crosshairs of the kidnapping gang, which is believed to include members from local Fulani herdsmen.
The community perceives the frequent attacks on Idowu as direct retaliation for his actions leading to the arrest of the kidnappers and the subsequent release of Chief Tajudeen, who happens to be Idowu’s uncle. This ongoing threat to his safety has created a climate of fear, as the group behind the kidnappings aims to eliminate anyone who poses a threat to their operations.
In June 2021, shortly after Chief Tajudeen’s release, the kidnappers abducted Idowu’s father, Chief Femi Idowu, from their home, with Ruth present at the scene. Although Chief Femi was eventually rescued, he succumbed to the injuries and trauma inflicted during his captivity, causing deep concern within the community about the kidnappers’ brutal methods.
After the traumatic events, Ruth relocated to Osun State seeking safety. However, in August 2024, the kidnappers tracked her down to a remote village and fatally assaulted her. Local residents describe Ruth’s death as an effort by the gang to silence her permanently to prevent any future testimony against them.
Community members are calling for increased security measures in light of these events, as the fear of retaliation continues to loom large over those who oppose the actions of the kidnapping syndicate. The situation has sparked significant outrage and calls for justice, as families seek to reclaim their sense of safety in the wake of such violent crimes.
