The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has proffered the reason why a fully loaded truck fell off the Pen Cinema bridge along the old Abeokuta Road, landing on commercial vehicles popularly called korope below.
Panic swept through the area on Saturday morning after news broke that a truck, bearing registration number GGE 624 YJ, had fallen from the Pen Cinema bridge onto several korope vehicles underneath.
Despite the heavy population in the area at the time, there were no immediate reports of mass casualties. However, the truck driver sustained serious injuries, fracturing his limbs and arms in the crash.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, revealed that preliminary investigations indicated the driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating the bridge.
Bakare-Oki confirmed that LASTMA officers promptly rescued the injured driver and handed him over to officers from the Elere Police Division, who then rushed him to the General Hospital in Ile-Epo for urgent medical treatment.
In the aftermath, LASTMA operatives swiftly cordoned off the scene and diverted traffic to prevent further accidents and ease congestion.
Bakare-Oki also used the opportunity to caution motorists to drive with extra care, especially with the onset of the rainy season, which often worsens road conditions.
