Deborah Fasoyin, the 84-year-old widely associated with the popular end-of-year song Odun Lo Sopin (A Year Is Running to an End), has clarified that she is not the original composer of the iconic tune.
In a recently circulated video interview, Mrs. Fasoyin revealed that the song originally came from Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Ibadan, where it was commonly sung as a revival hymn. She explained that her group, Good Women Choir, only added two verses to the original chorus during their recording in December 1979.
“We recorded Odun Lo Sopin in December 1979. I wasn’t the one that composed the song, and till today, we don’t know who did. A CAC in Ibadan used to sing the chorus as a revival song back then, and I only added two verses,” she said.
Despite the uncertainty about its origins, the song has become an enduring tradition, resonating with people every year as they reflect on the closing of one year and the hope of the next.
