For over 2 years, a Nairalander had been consistently subscribing to DStv, paying 9,000 naira per month for the Compact package. Despite enjoying the service, especially the Premier League football, he was surprised to find that he had been wasting his money.

When his subscription expired last week, the Nairalander @Rich4god checked the new price for the Compact package, which had increased to 15,000 naira per month. Realizing that he would be spending almost 180,000 naira per year on DStv, the Nairalander decided to explore other options.

While at home, the Nairalander started playing around with his smart TV’s apps and discovered a wealth of free content. There were apps that showed children’s movies, action films, and Nigerian movies. He also found live news channels like France 24 and Al Jazeera, as well as personal YouTube channels that had recent movies and cartoons.

The Nairalander then tested the casting feature on his smart TV and found that he could easily watch live football matches by streaming them from his phone to the TV. To his surprise, this didn’t consume a lot of data, and he was able to watch several matches without blowing through his monthly data allowance.

The Nairalander also discovered that many of the documentaries and shows from channels like National Geographic, Discovery, and Investigation ID were available on YouTube, eliminating the need for a paid TV subscription.

In addition, the smart TV had a radio app that provided access to a wide range of both local and international radio stations.

Concluding his discovery, the Nairalander expressed that he would be saying goodbye to DStv and other paid TV services, as he had found a more cost-effective way to enjoy his entertainment and news content.
