The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of at least 35 individuals, with several others critically injured, following a stampede at a children’s carnival in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at the Islamic High School, Basorun, during an event organized by Wings Foundation in partnership with Agidigbo FM. According to the police, eight individuals, including the event sponsor and the school’s principal, have been arrested in connection with the tragedy.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Adewale Osifeso, provided updates on the incident during a radio interview on Thursday morning. He revealed that investigations are ongoing, and the identities of the suspects are being withheld for now. Among those arrested are Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, aged 31, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the school.

Others detained include Genesis Christopher (24), Tanimowo Moruf (52), Anisolaja Olabode (42), Idowu Ibrahim (35), and Abiola Oluwatimilehin (25).

In a statement, Osifeso confirmed that the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the investigation.

“So far, 35 minors have been confirmed dead, while six others remain critically injured and are receiving medical attention,” Osifeso said. He also urged event organizers to prioritize security, especially during festive seasons, to prevent similar tragedies.
